Many people use self-harming behaviours to cope with their feelings on a regular basis. Behaviours such as comfort eating, gambling, driving too fast, "retail therapy", a glass or two of wine to relax and so on may be socially acceptable but are nevertheless self-harming, even though they are not always recognized as such.
